Boston & Denver Bowlers
Strike for Justice
in 2008

This year's Martín-Baró Fund bowlathon took place in both the Boston area and in Denver, Colorado. Our Boston bowlers and their supporters gathered on Sunday, April 6th, at Lanes and Games in Somerville, MA while teams organized by Kristen Kraus, an alumna of Weston Jesuit School of Theology, and her husband Jon, got together in Denver for the first Western bowlathon on Sunday, April 27th. Contributions raised by the Eastern and Western teams and their supporters will exceed last year's total of $30,000!
2008 was a year of firsts: Walberto Tejeda, a member of one of our grantee organizations, Centro Bartolomé de las Casas in El Salvador, had his first experience on the lanes. Bowlers and Fund supporters learned more about the CBC and its multiple community-based educational and mental health programs at several Boston events: a potluck dinner, graciously hosted in Cynthia Kennedy's home, and through presentations by Walberto at Boston College and other local NGOs. We thank Walberto and the CBC for extending our partnership to include a wonderful week together.
As always, the bowlathons brought together many people and their sponsors to support the Fund's grantees in a creative and fun way! A special thanks to Kristen and Jon for extending our Strike for Justice "across America". Thanks to all who bowled in Boston and Denver, and to our generous supporters. Article by Kelly L. Strike for Justice - 2009
Watch this space for date and time...

The Ignacio Martín-Baró Fund's annual spring Bowlathon is designed both to raise money to support our grantmaking, and to give all of us the opportunity to meet some of our many local supporters. We've broken our all-time fundraising records in each of the past four years: 2005's Bowlathon raised more than $20,000, 2006's topped $23,000. In 2007 we raised more than $30,000 to support our grassroots human rights and mental health projects throughout the world. In 2008 we expect to beat that record by the time all the checks are counted!

PLAN TO JOIN US at Lanes & Games next spring, and let's see if we can break our record once again! For information about organizing a team, finding sponsors, or any other aspect of Bowlathon 2009, email Ramsay Liem, our bowlathon coordinator. If you'd like to bowl but don't have a team, you can also contact Ramsay, and he'll find a team that needs a bowler.
